Govt Applies for U.S. $215 Million Funds

Dar es Salaam — Tanzania has applied for $215m financing from the World Bank to open-up Dar es Salaam corridor as well as boosting its economy.

The funding will also go towards the Southern Africa Trade and Transport Facilitation Project (SATTFP). SATTFP's main objective is to contribute to economic growth in the Eastern and Southern Africa by facilitating the movement of goods, people and fostering regional integration. According to a proclamation by the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS), the government intends to apply part of the money to pay for goods, works and consulting services to be procured under the project.

TANROADS said the project will include four components of improving physical infrastructure, mitigating social costs, implementation assistance and institutional support together with improved corridor management and monitoring.

The first component comprises three sub-components that include the rehabilitation of the 137.9km Mafinga - Igawa road section of the Dar es Salaam corridor, in the southern highland of Tanzania linking Iringa and Mbeya regions.
The design and implementation of infrastructure enhancement at the Songwe - Kasumulu border crossing. "This component will support improved physical infrastructure at the Songwe - Kasumulu border crossing, between Malawi and Tanzania," the agency said.

It added the construction of three one-stop rest stops in Tanzania.

"This sub-component involves the construction of three consolidated rest stop, weigh bridge and police checkpoint, the agency said, adding that the first will be at Vigwaza, which will serve both the central and Dar corridors."

The component two will finance road safety initiatives and HIV/Aids initiatives on the Dar es Salaam corridor which comprises Dar - Mbeya, Mbeya - Malawi border and Mbeya Tunduma border, in the southern highlands of Tanzania.

Third component will provide necessary project management and implementation assistance to the implementation units, together with capacity building and training, and other priority studies.

The fourth component will support the strengthening of the DCC and the funding of its operating costs, and the establishment of a corridor performance management system.
