Zanzibar Law Society demands investigation into prisoners held on mainland

The Zanzibar Law Society (ZLS) has called for investigations into the Tanzanian government's alleged abuse of Zanzibari suspects charged with terrorism, Tanzania's Daily News reported Thursday (August 28th).

Said argued that the extradition of Zanzibaris to mainland Tanzania violates the islands' laws, and that they should be returned to Zanzibar and tried there.
"These are serious allegations against law enforcers and they have not been refuted since the claims were put forward," ZLS President Awadhi Ali Said said at a press conference in Zanzibar. "This tarnishes the image of the police and the state, [and] we want allegations investigated."
"We have written letters to Zanzibar Minister for Constitution and Legal Affairs, Zanzibar Attorney General and the Zanzibar Director of Public Prosecution, asking them to form an independent probe team [to look] into this controversy," Said said.
For his part, Berious Nyasebwa, legal adviser at the Tanzanian Ministry of Internal Affairs, said the prisoners' detention in Dar es Salaam was legal since their alleged crimes were committed on the mainland.
"For the offences committed in Zanzibar, they will be brought to Zanzibar and charged," he said. For all other suspects accused of committing crimes elsewhere, they will be charged on the mainland, he added.
