Arab leaders agree on joint military force

Arab leaders agree on joint military force
SHARM EL SHEIKH, EGYPT: Arab leaders yesterday agreed to form a joint military force after a summit dominated by an offensive on rebels in Yemen and the threat from extremism. Arab representatives will meet over the next month to study the formation of the force and present their findings to defence ministers within four months, according to the resolution adopted by the leaders.
“Assuming the great responsibility imposed by the great challenges facing our Arab nation and threatening its capabilities, the Arab leaders had decided to agree on the principle of a joint Arab military force,” Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al Sisi told the summit in the resort town of Sharm el Sheikh.
On behalf of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos, His Highness Sayyid Asaad bin Tareq al Said, Representative of His Majesty the Sultan, led Oman’s delegation at the summit.

The decision was mostly aimed at fighting rebels who have overrun swathes of Iraq and Syria and secured a foothold in Libya, Arab League Chief Nabil al Arabi said ahead of the summit.
Arabi told the meeting yesterday that the region was threatened by a “destructive” force that threatened “ethnic and religious diversity”, in an apparent reference to the IS group.
“What is important is that today there is an important decision, in light of the tumult afflicting the Arab world,” he said. Arabi reiterated that the Arab national security has been subjected to many threats and urged international community to support Arab efforts in fighting terrorism and take necessary measures to cut resources of terror groups.
“We stress the necessity to coordinate international and Arab efforts by exchanging intelligence and security information, as well as military cooperation,” he said.
He also voiced full Arab support to the Palestinian people and their legal rights in accordance with international legitimacy and the Arab-proposed peace initiative.
Arabi called on Israel to join Non-Proliferation Treaty, urging to place all nuclear facilities in the Middle East, including Iran, under the monitoring of the International Atomic Energy Agency. —
